Truck Hire Putney

All you need to know about hiring a truck in Putney

Putney is a district of the London Borough of Wandsworth in southwest London, England. Situated 7.9 km (4.9 miles) southwest of Charing Cross, the region is listed in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.

Known for its open spaces and sports, Putney is a place Londoners have headed to for decades for pleasure. Its riverside location makes it the perfect place for rowing. And Putney is probably most well known as being the starting place for the famed Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race since 1845. Rowing aside, cricket also has a long history in Putney, with the village green at the corner of Wildcroft and Telegraph Roads home to Roehampton Cricket Club. Established in 1842, this is one of the oldest cricket teams in London.

Putney is pricey, and you certainly pay a premium to live there. The houses are stunning, and the parks and riverfront are a real draw for residents. High street shops have always been well regarded there although retailers have diminished over the years due to the increase in online shopping. Putney has also always been a successful office centre. But again, this has significantly declined over the years. However, Wandsworth Council is updating their Local Plan to refocus the strategy and vision for the area and look at development and growth over the next 15 years. Meaning exciting times ahead and more investment going into transforming this location.

Putney, as an area, has excellent public transport. The centre, however, has significant through traffic running east-west along Upper Richmond Road and north-south along Putney High Street. Heavy traffic makes driving in Putney particularly slow. Traffic is especially busy at peak times and things are often worse when Hammersmith bridge is closed. This has a huge knock-on effect on traffic levels on Putney bridge in either direction, so always worth checking before setting off.

As of October 2021, Transport for London (TfL) expanded the Ultra-Low Emission Zone to extend up to (but not including) the North and South Circular roads (A205 and A406). This means that areas in Putney are now included in the zone, so you need to be aware as you're driving and check to see if your vehicle is subject to a daily charge. There are also a small number of postcodes that cross the zone boundary. You can check a postcode online to see if it falls within the ULEZ, but it's worth keeping an eye out for ULEZ boundary signs on the street.

Truck (or lorry)* hire in Putney

Truck rental has become significantly more popular in the last couple of years, particularly within the haulage industry where organisations generally would own their fleet. Nowadays, more organisations are choosing to lease a vehicle over buying one to take advantage of the benefits. For example, adapting to seasonal demand is easier when you can lease a vehicle, and leased vehicles mean less service and upkeep costs.

From this perspective, truck hire is a substantially more productive and financially savvy choice for some, which is why businesses depend on organisations like ours, Nationwide Hire.

In the UK, a lorry (or truck) is a heavy goods vehicle that falls into one of three categories:

 • Smaller 2-Axle – over 3.5 and up to 7.5 tonnes

 • Bigger 2-Axle – over 7.5 and up to 18 tonnes

 • Multi-Axle (3 to 6 axles) – ranging from 25 tonnes to 44 tonnes.

* If you're a bit confused about whether it's referred to as a lorry or a truck, it's worth noting that lorries in the UK classification also qualify as trucks. However, for the same reason, not all trucks are lorries, as some do not meet the UK lorry specifications.
