Car Hire Fulham

All you need to know about hiring a car in Fulham

If you’re travelling down South for a work trip, road trip or family holiday, Fulham has something for everyone. Located in the southwest corner of the capital, you can hire a car in Fulham and get the most out of the area, or use one of our nearby branches to rent from there – then explore everything it has to offer.

Fulham lies between Kensington, Chelsea and Wandsworth, so expect a trendy area overflowing with bars and nightlife, excellent restaurants, upmarket property and a range of shops and boutiques. In fact, it’s considered to have some of the best pubs in the capital. It’s also partly bordered by the River Thames, meaning there are opportunities for riverside walks and sport. Though if it’s fun and activities you’re after, you might want to score a ticket to the beautiful game – football fans will know that Fulham’s home to two clubs: Fulham FC and Chelsea FC.

Fulham is also part of the borough of Hammersmith. That means you’re only a stone’s throw from the Eventim Apollo – the famed music, comedy and theatre venue – and the nearby parks of Wandsworth and Battersea. Whether it’s a stroll, games in the park or a picnic, you’re sure to please them all when you hire a car in Fulham and check out its green spaces.

Another area of interest is Fulham’s background – it’s an area absolutely steeped in history. Once a swampland populated with waterfowl, its name may come from the Saxon ‘Fullenhame’, or ‘bird habitat’. Over the generations, it was the summer residence of London’s well-to-do before becoming an industrial centre with factories for motor, aviation and brewing. Fulham was even the base of Rolls Royce in a previous life. Now, though, it’s been renewed, redeveloped and restored following bombing in the Second World War.

Finally, you might be looking into a spot of shopping. Fulham is well-served by exclusive shopping postcodes like Kings Road and Sloane Street that are close by.

Driving in Fulham

London is a straightforward city to navigate, and it’s well-connected not just by its public transport network (think the tube, water boats, the overground, buses and Boris bikes), but by its roads. When hiring a car in Fulham, lots of the city’s main attractions are right on your doorstep – making entertainment even easier.

Driving zones in Fulham

Fulham is a busy area and for that reason, it’s not only part of ULEZ (London’s Ultra-Low Emissions Zone), but part of TCPR (the Traffic, Congestion and Pollution Reduction scheme). While ULEZ requires motorists to pay a daily charge for driving in certain areas, TCPR is quite a different ballgame. This scheme actually bars certain roads from being accessed, except by residents and their visitors. These areas are tightly monitored by smart cameras, so it’s a good idea to plan your route in advance, be mindful of road signs and markings, and ensure you know where you’re allowed to drive.

Major road links in and around Fulham

If you’ve picked up a hire car before driving into Fulham, these are the key roads in and out of the area:

  • Talgarth Road (A4)

  • New King’s Road (A308)
  • Wandsworth Bridge Road (A217)

It does take a lot of the stress and planning out of driving your hire vehicle, and even when the capital is at its busiest, you’ll find plenty of options for getting around.

Fulham events and attractions

As we’ve mentioned, Fulham is bursting with things to do – and it’s a popular destination in the capital all year round. Because our vehicles can seat multiple people, hiring a car in Fulham can be a cheaper way to get around the city as a whole. Some of our tips for driving in Fulham include:

  • Checking out ULEZ and TCPR zones
  • Scoping our routes in and out of the area
  • Researching parking in and around your venue
  • Booking parking spaces well in advance

There are many streets in Fulham – especially those close to main attractions – where parking could pose a problem, however for places like Thorpe ParkLegoland and Chessington World of Adventures, there’s generally on-site car parks that should have spaces. As for venues like the O2 and Wembley, advance parking is a wise choice to prevent issues on the day.

Airport drop off and pick up

From London City to London Heathrow, Gatwick to Southend, and Luton to Stansted, London has more airports than any other city in Europe. Each offers a range of flights and destinations, every day of the year. All you need to be mindful of is any parking charges – even if you’re only stopping for a few minutes to meet a passenger. Be aware of:

  • Parking for long and short stays
  • Allocated zones/lanes for pick-up and drop-off
  • Restrictions on vehicle types and sizes
  • As with any travel plans, it pays to do your research before you go.

No change here

London is notorious for its tolls and charges – including the central London Congestion Charge. The Dartford Crossing is also one to take note of. If your route takes you on the M25, there’s a charge for using the crossing between 6am-10pm. You’ll need an account to  pay, and must make sure you do this within the allotted time period. Or, pay in advance – you can even get a discount when you open an account. Just make your payment online or at a designated Payzone store.

Tune in and tune out

London has an abundance of radio stations to keep drivers – and passengers – entertained. Just set your hire car radio to 94.9 for BBC London, 95.8 for Capital FM London or any other local channel for the latest news and travel updates.
